The book features 175 landscapes and seascapes from his summers there in the 1920s, starting in 1923, when Hopper first took up watercolor on outdoor painting trips on Cape Ann and found one of his favorite subjects in houses and vernacular architecture. It also recasts the painter Josephine Nivison, who became Hopper’s wife, as a central force behind his artistic confidence and distinctive style.

It accompanies a retrospective at the Cape Ann Museum that includes a loan of twenty-eight works from the Whitney Museum of American Art.
