About this book
In the Shadow of No Towers is Art Spiegelman’s account of the September 11 attacks and their aftermath, told in drawings and text. Spiegelman, the author of Maus, and his family witnessed the attacks in their lower Manhattan neighborhood, where his teenage daughter had started school directly below the towers days earlier. Pantheon published the book in 2004 as a 42-page hardcover.
The pages use an oversized, two-page-spread format that echoes the scale of the earliest newspaper comics, which Spiegelman says brought him solace after the attacks. The publisher describes how his anguish turned to fury at the U.S. government, and the book takes up the changes enacted in the name of post-9/11 national security.
