About this book

The Institutes, also known as The Institutes of the Cenobia and the Remedies for the Eight Principal Vices, is the first written work of John Cassian. This translation by Boniface Ramsey, with his annotations, is a companion to Cassian’s Conferences in the Ancient Christian Writers series. Newman Press of the Paulist Press published it in 2000 as a 304-page hardcover.

The work has two sections. The first deals with the institutes and rules of Egyptian monasteries, including monastic garb and prayer. The second, in eight books, treats the eight principal vices and describes how to counter them, drawing on the metaphor of the monk as an athlete competing in a contest.
