About this book
The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness, and Greed by John Vaillant is set in the forests of British Columbia’s Queen Charlotte Islands, where trees grow to eighteen feet in diameter. W. W. Norton & Company published it in 2005 as a 272-page hardcover.
Logger-turned-activist Grant Hadwin plunged into a river towing a chainsaw, and when his night’s work was done a unique Sitka spruce, 165 feet tall with golden needles, teetered on its stump. Two days later it fell. Five months on, a shattered kayak and camping gear found on an uninhabited island reignited the mystery around his act of protest.
The tree was sacred to the Haida, and Vaillant also recounts their history, the early fur trade and the logging industry.
