About this book

Young Men and Fire is Norman Maclean’s work of nonfiction about the Mann Gulch fire of August 5, 1949. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2017 as a 352-page hardcover with a new foreword by Timothy Egan.

On that day a crew of fifteen Smokejumpers, the US Forest Service’s airborne firefighters, parachuted toward a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after the jump, all but three of the men were dead or mortally burned. Maclean, haunted by these deaths for forty years, pieces together what happened.

The book won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the publisher describes it as a classic of the American West.
